A barn, a silo, a corn crib, a fence and a yard full of animals — from a few sheets of cardstock and a glue stick. Print it, cut it, fold it, glue it. Colour it yourself or use the painted version. Made in Iowa; the barn quilt is an Ohio Star.

Every sheet is letter size, landscape. Print on cardstock at 100% scale — turn off “fit to page” or the pieces will not match.

How it goes together

Colour first, while it is flat

Much easier now than after it is a box. Skip this on the painted sheets.

Cut the thick black lines, fold the dashed ones

Thin lines are boards, shingles, trim and hoops — do not cut those. A paper cutter is fastest: the grey guide lines running to the paper edge show where the long straight cuts go.

Fold the walls into a box, glue the end tab inside

Then fold the floor up and glue its three tabs inside the walls. Fold the little tabs on the barn ends inward and glue the roof onto them. The hood end of the roof goes over the hay door.

Silo: curve it, don’t bend it

Pull the strip firmly over a table edge or a book spine, printed side up, or curl it round a pencil — whichever works for you. Roll into a tube, glue the tab inside, fold the top tabs in, and the cone sits on like a hat.

Animals: cut the rectangles, fold, glue back to back

No cutting round the outline. Fold on the heavy dashed line so the print is outside, glue the two halves together, and fold the foot tabs out one each way. It stands.

The tip that makes it easy

A paper clip or bobby pin holds a glued tab square while the glue dries. Ordinary paper glue or a glue stick — you want to be able to nudge things straight.

What you end up with

The barn is about 2½ inches long. Everything else is sized to it. Whole set fits on a shelf.
